About Reed Inititiative
Switch the Bag. Save the Drain
Purpose
To reduce environmental flooding caused by nylon waste while creating sustainable income opportunities for local reed basket makers.
The purpose is to align environmental sustainability with economic empowerment, using market demand as the bridge between both challenges.
Ambition
To make reusable reed baskets the default shopping carrier across Lagos and eventually across Nigeria, transforming a traditional craft into a scalable, climate resilient economic movement.
The long term ambition is to normalize sustainable consumer behavior while building a structured, commercially viable ecosystem for artisans.
The Problem I’m Solving
1. Environmental Crisis
Recurring flooding in Lagos is worsened by nylon waste clogging drainage systems. Heavy reliance on single use plastic shopping bags continues to drive environmental degradation.
2. Economic Marginalization
Local reed basket makers suffer from:
• Low sales
• Poor visibility
• Fragmented market access
• Inconsistent demand
This results in persistent poverty and underutilized production capacity.
Two separate challenges but deeply interconnected.
The Solution
We are building a sustainable and scalable reed basket value chain that:
• Replaces nylon shopping bags with durable, biodegradable alternatives
• Increases visibility and structured market access for artisans
• Integrates branding, distribution, advocacy, and retail partnerships
• Drives behavioral change through strategic media engagement
By increasing demand for reed baskets, we reduce dependence on nylon bags.
Reducing nylon bag usage lowers plastic waste and helps mitigate flooding.
Solving poverty among basket makers directly contributes to solving plastic pollution.
The Offer
We offer:
• A practical, eco-friendly alternative to nylon shopping bags
• A vertically integrated artisan support platform (production, branding, distribution)
• Retail and institutional supply partnerships
• Media driven advocacy that shapes consumer behavior
• A scalable business model where revenue growth increases environmental impact
This is not just a product, it is a structured ecosystem where economic growth becomes the engine for environmental change.
